THE CONGESTORIUM ARTIFICIOSE MEMORIE BY JOHANNES HOST VON ROMBERCH:...
RAMOS GRANÉ, MARTA
This book consists of a study and critical edition of the Congestorium artificiose memorie by Johannes Host Von Romberch (Venice 1520 and 1533). The Congestiorum is possibly the most important of the artes memoriae published in the 16th century. For two reasons: Because it Brings together all the previous tradition (classical and medieval) and constitutes the authentic mnemonic encyclopaedia of the renaissance, which, in turn, is at the basis of the apogee of this discipline in the Baroque period. For this reason, the doctrinal, didactic and pedagogical dimension of the arts of memory published before 1520 is examined, looking at the positions that influenced Romberch, and the works published at a later date, analysing the possible effects of the Congestorium on on subsequent treatises. Romberchs treatise is thus studied from a diachronic and diatopic perspective, paying particular attention to the mutual interactions between the various mnemonic treatise writers from different European countries. The importance of the authors contributions modern conceptions of Memory as part of Rhetoric is also considered.
